World Ocean Day June 8th 2021
For 2021, World Ocean Day is raising awareness and support for the global movement to protect at least 30% of the world's lands, waters, and ocean by 2030 (30x30). Safeguarding at least 30% through a network of highly protected areas can help ensure a healthy ocean and climate.
To establish marine protected areas, scientists, fisherman, and the public must work together with elected officials and tribal leaders. Currently only 7% of our ocean is part of a marine protected area. It’s a start, but scientists have determined we need to protect at least 30% of our planet, land and ocean, by the year 2030. If we want to continue to receive clean air and drinking water, food, and natural resources that support our economy, this 30% is the minimum we need protected.
A healthy ocean is a critical part of the solution to the climate crisis. By supporting 30x30, we can protect our planet’s life support systems – specifically the interconnected issues of ocean, climate, and biodiversity.
About World Ocean Day: Coordinated and promoted internationally by The Ocean Project since 2002, World Ocean Day is an annual celebration on 8 June as well as a call for ocean conservation action throughout the year. Starting in 2009, World Ocean Day has also been officially recognized by the United Nations. This celebration of our one shared ocean brings together organizations and individuals from youth groups, schools, aquariums, zoos, museums, businesses, maritime and tourism industries, government agencies, recreational enthusiasts including divers, surfers, sailors, communities of faith and more.
