Gen-Sea: 42% of 18-24 years olds plan to charter a boat this summer holiday

  • 42% of 18–24 year olds are planning on chartering (renting) a boat this summer holiday.
  • Nearly half, 46%, of 18–24 year olds prefer sailing/boating on the sea as opposed to rivers, canals, lakes or lochs.
  • Gen Z’ers most looking forward to relaxing (38%), spending time with loved ones (29%), exploring new places (28%) and spending time in nature (27%) on their summer staycation.

Coming of age during a pandemic has meant that Gen Z’ers have missed out on many of the experiences taken for granted by their predecessors, with most spending the last year studying, working and socialising all from one room. Now, as lockdown restrictions ease across the UK, it’s unsurprising that 18–24 year olds are looking for new ways to catch up with friends and family while exploring and travelling the UK this summer.

A study of 2,000 adults, commissioned by leading boat hire and yacht charter platform Borrow A Boat, has found that 42% of 18-24 year olds are planning on chartering a boat and using their staycation to explore new places (28%), relax (38%), spend time in nature (27%), and enjoy much needed quality time with loved ones (29%). Whilst nearly half, 46%, of 18–24 year olds prefer the thrill of sailing/boating on the sea.

Matt Ovenden, CEO of Borrow A Boat and boating enthusiast said: “While some may be surprised that 42% of Gen Z’ers are planning on chartering a boat this summer, when you consider that they’ve been largely confined to one household for the last year, rather than enjoying many of the traditional rites of passage, like their predecessors, it makes a lot of sense.

“Being on the water offers a unique feeling of freedom and the opportunity to immerse in nature as you are both physically and mentally removed from your normal day-to-day – an experience that’s the polar opposite of being confined to the same household day in, day out.

“The fact that 46% of Gen Z prefer sailing and boating on the sea, further illustrates their thirst for freedom and new experiences this summer. It’s the ultimate adventure post-lockdown and by opting for a skippered charter, you don’t even have to have sailing experience to rent your own boat, simply some good friends and a sense of adventure.”

This trip is also great for wildlife spotters. Expect to see a plethora of wildlife including seals, porpoises, puffins, and many types of seabirds on your trip.

The New Orleans is the ultimate party boat to host your own regatta-style summer soiree.
