Travel news: Local Cottage Letting Donates to Keep Devon Beaches Clean

To support and protect the Devon coastline Marsdens Devon Cottages, part of the Original Cottages family, has donated funds to charity partner Plastic Free North Devon (PFND).

Started by volunteers PFND is a local environmental charity that aims to protect and improve the environment through community-led action, combatting plastic pollution in North Devon and beyond. By working with residents, visitors and businesses they aim to inspire a healthier and more informed relationship with the environment. Marsden Devon Cottages is dedicated to supporting PFND projects to ensure North Devon wildlife and ecosystems are protected for residents and holidaymakers alike.

As part of Original Cottages, who operate a wide range of holiday homes across England and Wales, Marsden Devon Cottages are operated by locals, who live and breathe their local communities. This not only makes them experts in the region, but it also means they truly understand the importance of supporting projects that are important to the area.

The cottage letting company is also joining PFND’s Protect our Playground project, a scheme dedicated to reducing demand for plastic beach toys and raising awareness of sustainable alternatives. To support the cause, Marsdens Devon Cottages has purchased wooden belly boards made by a small UK business from sustainably sourced wood designed to last a lifetime.

Some will be utilised as part of a free rental scheme that PFND will be operating from outside their Braunton office, which will build on their expanding rental offering with their various partners across the area. The remaining will be utilised and made available for people to use for free at various beach outreach events across the summer.

Gemma Davenport, Brand Manager for Devon, Original Cottages said; “We pride ourselves on being a truly local brand committed to keeping the coastline clean and safe for the local community and educating our holidaymakers on how they can contribute towards sustainable initiatives during their stay. It’s great to know that the guests who have booked to stay with us, will not only enjoy a memorable stay, but they'll be helping our local communities to thrive through the donation to Plastic Free North Devon and involvement in the Protect our Playground project.”

Claire Moodie, CEO, Plastic Free North Devon said; “We are thrilled that Original Cottages are continuing to support our work and are committed to helping us improve and protect our surrounding environment. It’s great to see them using their business as a vehicle to spread ways in which we can all tackle the environmental issues we face. With over 5 million visitors a year to the North Devon region, the tourism industry has a huge opportunity to positively influence and inspire the people that visit and in turn send ripple effects throughout the country.’’
