Travel Inspiration: Exceptionally Picturesque States to Experience America

A new study has revealed that Rhode Island is the most picturesque state to visit for those traveling to the US. The state offers one of the most traditional American landscapes to travellers eager to experience what the country has to offer.

The research by photography and printing experts Printique scored states by number of registered historic places, national parks, national historic landmarks, Instagram hashtags, and the number of Google searches its most popular location receives.

Here are the top 10 most picturesque US destinations to add to your travel plans:

3. Florida
4. New York
5. California
6. Maryland
7. New Jersey
8. Connecticut
9. Tennessee
10. Hawaii

In first place, known for its colonial towns and shorelines, is Rhode Island. The smallest US state has the largest number of historic places, national parks, and national landmarks registered for its size, most famously The Breakers mansion in Newport. There are approximately four registered historic places for every 10 square miles – the highest ratio on the list. Rhode Island features 45 national landmarks, only one less landmark than New Mexico which is approximately 100 times its size.

Massachusetts scores highly on the number of National Parks listed in its 17 thousand square mile area, helping the state to place second in the list. Massachusetts has 16 listed national parks and is famously home to the national seashore of Cape Cod, featuring sandy beaches, marshes, and uplands. It also holds the second highest number of landmarks after New York and comes in second for the most historical places for its size, with 4,419 locations listed.

Florida, third on the list, scores high for Instagram hashtags, at 64 million, and for a vast number of searches for its most popular location. The home of the Cinderella Castle, Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando racks up approximately 1.6 million searches every month – 624,000 more than the next most popular location.

Following Florida in fourth place is New York, which scored maximum points the highest for the number of Instagram hashtags. The state also features more than 250 landmarks and in excess of 6,000 registered historic places, a higher number than any other state.

The Golden State placed a respectable fifth position. Home to the Golden Gate Bridge and Yosemite National Park, California has the most national parks and the fourth-most landmarks, however due to its size does not score as highly as smaller states. The state follows New York as the second-most hashtagged state on Instagram.

A spokesperson from Printique commented: “The sheer number of historic places, landmarks and parks Rhode Island offers for its small size makes it a must-visit location for a taste of authentic American landscape and architecture. While some expected names feature in the top 10, New York and California for example, these results show that internationally less well-known states such as Maryland and Connecticut offer a picturesque visiting experience.”
