Holiday Hotspot Lisbon named top place to be a digital nomad in 2022, following a new study

Lisbon, the Portuguese city famous for its colourful ornate buildings, stunning hilltop scenery, and of course Piri-piri chicken, is now to become recognized for being the leader in a digital nomadic lifestyle, according to a new study.

The study by Instant Offices, revealed that Lisbon came top of the charts for those looking for the perfect alternative nomadic work-life balance, closely followed by Bankok in Thailand.

For the perfect nomadic flexible workspace, the key factors keep in mind are affordability, weather, broadband-speed, scenery and transport, all of which Lisbon flourished in.

Key findings:

  • 80% of digital nomads prefer to stay in one location for 3-9 months.
  • There are 35 million digital nomads worldwide
  • Lisbon has more than 7,000 wifi spots
  • The average broadband speed in the city is 163mbps
  • Lisbon has one of the lowest costs of living in the world
  • Flexible workspace as a proportion of the total office market will grow from 5% to almost 13% by 2025.

What is a digital nomad?

A digital nomad is a remote worker who travels and works simultaneously, visiting locations worldwide, working from beaches, coffee shops and coworking spaces. Some digital nomads only travel for a few months, and others do it for years. Research suggests that 80% of digital nomads prefer to stay in one location for 3-9 months.

The perfect nomadic work-life culture

With its idyllic weather (topped the best in Europe to be precise), incredibly friendly and inviting atmosphere from locals and tourists alike, and stunning scenery, there is little not to love about Lisbon. In between working, you can explore some of the best beaches in Europe, beautiful coves, delectable food, hilltop hideaways and trendy bars, while feeling safe in the knowledge work tomorrow can be stress free with a solid wifi connection.
