As summer slowly starts to fade, many of us crave just one more dose of warmth and sunshine. Europe offers a wide range of destinations that still bask in pleasant temperatures as autumn approaches – some even lovelier now than during peak season only a couple of weeks ago.

Our beloved Mediterranean

The Mediterranean is synonymous with sun, sea and sand. Even (or rather, especially now) as the summer crowds thin out, these destinations continue to offer idyllic weather and plenty of attractions.

You can never go wrong booking a Spain holiday. It’s the perennial favourite of the Brits. And how couldn’t it, being renowned for its culture, wonderful beaches and absolutely delightful cuisine. Oh, did you know the world’s oldest restaurant can be found in Madrid, the Casa Botín? It opened its doors in 1773! Away from the tourist spots, the country has lots of quieter places to explore, where you can wander through pretty villages, hike rugged trails and just enjoy the clean waters.

Italy is of course another perfect candidate with its ancient ruins and many stunning coastal towns. We’re especially in love with Sicily’s, the birthplace of the mafia, volcanic landscapes.

And then there’s Greece, of course, with its wonderful islands, ruins and friendly locals. Santorini and its iconic, white-washed buildings and caldera views is an absolute must-visit – but for a more authentic, even less crowded vibe, head to something even smaller, like Crete or Corfu.

Croatia is still very much a hidden gem, but especially its national parks offer a diverse range of activities for visitors. Split, with its stunning Diocletian's Palace, is a popular destination, while the islands of Hvar and Brač offer a more laid-back atmosphere.

The year-round sunshine haven of the Canary Islands

Just off the coast of Africa is the perfect place to escape the British weather: the Canary islands, believed to be the origin of the legend of Atlantis. Tenerife, the largest of the islands, is known for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain (fantastic for hiking!). Gran Canaria offers a more diverse landscape with mountains, deserts, and lush forests (equally fantastic for hiking!). Lanzarote is famous for its volcanic landscapes and unique architecture (also very much – ah, you get the idea).

Portuguese Paradise

Portugal is another excellent option for an autumn getaway. The Algarve in the south is perfect if you’re looking to play some golf or enjoy some water sports. But the capital city, Lisbon, and Madeira, a volcanic island, are also fan-favourites.

But if you fancy something a bit different, why not explore some of Europe’s lesser-known sunny escapes? Have a look at Cyprus and Malta, for example!

Whether you’re after relaxation, adventure, or a bit of culture, Europe’s got something for everyone. Pick a destination that stays warm into autumn, and you can squeeze a little more sunshine out of your almost-still-summer break.
