Travel truly is food for the soul. Whether taking a simple sojourn to your nearest national park for a weekend of wild walking, or hopping across the globe to far-flung festivities and other such dramatic destinations, getting away from it all can be an incredible boost to health, self-esteem and drive besides.

In the wake of rising costs for everything from domestic heating to holidays themselves, travel has simultaneously got harder and more important. Now, then, is the time for you to think about what travel means for you in 2024. As you start to figure out the specifics of your travel plans for next year, it can help to re-tool your planning processes; in a nutshell, what should you be thinking about for your coming year of travel?

Itinerary Flexibility

First of all, flexibility is a key virtue to adopt ahead of your next year’s travel. Between cost issues stemming from unpredictable economic events, and travel issues stemming from unpredictable weather events, it is possible that your best-laid plans do indeed ‘gang aft agley’.

As such, approaching your travel itinerary not as an iron scripture, but instead as a serving suggestion, can go a long way to improving the quality of your trips. There still should be some structure to your plans – if only to ensure that friends and family know where you are in the event of an accident.

Travel Insurance

Where last-minute disruptions or issues arise, there is often little that can be done – particularly with regard to the cost you’ve already poured into your plans. In these instances, insurance is your friend. In the early stages of trip-planning, insurance can look very much like an unnecessary and even frivolous cost; this couldn’t be further from the truth, though, with potentially thousands on the line in the event of a sudden weather event.

Travel Budget

Of course, we cannot go much farther without acknowledging the elephant in the room: budget. Budgets unfortunately dictate a great deal of what our holiday plans look like, but with the right approach to budgeting in the first place you can absolutely achieve more.

For starters, saving your money in the right places can ensure it does not get frittered away by accident, while also ensuring that it grows passively with compound interest – getting you that bit further towards the more ambitious of your travel plans.

Sustainability

Finally, we come to an even bigger elephant: sustainability. We’ve already touched on the negative impacts of climate change on travel plans, but what about the negative impact of travel on climate change? Air travel is notoriously pollutive, bringing an ethical element to your holidaymaking. Alternative means of transport are slower, but could be cheaper – not to mention more fun! Why not travel by boat, and see more of the world in the process?
