Aurora Expeditions sees significant interest in travel and voyages to the Weddell Sea and South Georgia following the discovery of Endurance
In the forthcoming 2022/23 season Aurora Expeditions are offering 6 voyages to Antarctica that include time exploring the Weddell Sea region and separate travel voyages to South Georgia
Following yesterday’s discovery, Jos Dewing Managing Director of Aurora Expeditions commented on the almost instant rise in interest and enquiries that this historic find has generated.
“ We have seen a significant uplift in enquiries and bookings in the UK across our Antarctic season for the forthcoming 2022/23 on our two ships, the Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earl and following yesterday’s astonishing news we fully expect this interest to increase significantly. We are already seeing a rise in interest for our expeditions to South Georgia, already a very popular expedition route because of the historical connection to Shackleton, and we fully anticipate that interest to grow for our Wild Antarctic voyages which include time spent exploring the Weddell Sea region.”
He continued “As a result of the incredible clarity of the underwater photography that has been widely shared across the media we have already seen considerable interest across our social media channels with interest coming from across the world. This historic discovery will certainly inspire our guests to take advantage of our scuba diving and snorkelling activities onboard to feel just a little more connected to the region where the ship has been located.”
Aurora Expeditions’ ships are built for exploration and expedition, and offer the perfect basecamp to explore the history, nature and beauty of the Antarctic Peninsular and Weddell Sea where this truly breath-taking discovery of Endurance has been made.
Alasdair Magregor, spokesperson for Aurora Expeditions’ Expedition Team and a historian who has written three books on Antarctica commented,
"It is just astonishing! A hundred years to the day after Shackleton was laid to rest on the island of South Georgia, his ship Endurance is discovered in the depths of the Weddell Sea. Protected by the cold and dark for over a century, this remarkable find will now inspire renewed interest in one of the great sagas of human endeavour," commented Alasdair Macgregor, historian and regular Expedition Team member on Aurora's voyages.
For those more adventurous travelers who want to discover Shackleton’s history in Antarctica themselves, Aurora Expeditions regularly runs voyages to the Weddell Sea as well as South Georgia, many of which are close to capacity for the 2022/23 season.
Aurora is also the only operator to regularly offer the Shackleton’s Crossing experience as one of our optional activities, where small groups of adventurous expeditioners attempt to repeat Shackleton’s epic 1916 crossing, trekking for up to three days across South Georgia from King Haakon Bay to Stromness. Currently the next voyage to offer this experience is the South Georgia & Antarctic Odyssey from 21 Oct-8 Nov 2022.
Aurora Expeditions (www.auroraexpeditions.co.uk ) offers a 12-Day Wild Antarctica Expedition, including the Weddell Sea from £11,600 per person based on 2 people sharing a stateroom cabin on board the new ship Sylvia Earle.
