Forage and feast along the coast
This corner of southeast England has a burgeoning reputation as a foodie destination owing to the quality of its local produce – often fresh from the sea. Enjoy a gourmet foraging adventure with renowned forager Lucia Stuart from The Wild Kitchen. Search secret places for fresh shellfish, nutritious edible seaweed and more, learn how to cook your finds and finish with a wild gourmet feast. New coastal foraging adventures for 2022 include Tour de Forage: Spring Foraging by Bike (21 May; £129 pp).
The picturesque smugglers’ town of Deal is home to The Rose, one of Kent’s best restaurants with rooms. Its mouth-watering menu is a collaboration between the visionary chef Nuno Mendes, formerly of Chiltern Firehouse and The Rose head chefs Luke Green and David Gadd. Delicious delights await, such as a savoury doughnut filled with crab, smoked-beef tartare with pickled redcurrants and cured sea trout with charcoal cream.

Jubilee party on the green
Celebrate the Queen’s 70 years on the throne with a big bash on Walmer Green, Deal, over the Jubilee weekend (4 June). Events and exhibitions will showcase the changing world of food, fashion and transport during the longest ever reign of a British Monarch. The day will feature the inaugural Best of Kent Food, Beer and Wine Festival highlighting some of the county’s finest food and drink from specialist food producers, craft breweries and local vineyards. A special Jubilee Concert featuring the Queen’s favourite music will be the finale of the day.
White Cliffs Walking Festival
Put your best foot forward and discover the health and wellbeing benefits of rambling while exploring the treasures of southeast Kent at the White Cliffs Walking Festival (25-30 August). Incorporating the historic towns of Dover, Deal, Sandwich and Folkestone, the festival features walks from two to 30 miles in length, with themes ranging from history, geocaching, flora and fauna. The coast’s soaring cliffs provide a breath-taking backdrop. Find out more and plan your Dover visit with England’s Coast.
Cycle the Sandwich Way
For a scenic, two-wheeled adventure, The Sandwich Way (Route 15) is hard to beat. It follows an imaginative route which can be enjoyed year-round through beautiful rolling countryside between Whitfield and Sandwich past ancient churches, hedgerows, yew trees, and villages with ‘hall house’ buildings dating from medieval times. There’s also a 50-mile circular Cathedral-to-Coast cycle ride which passes many of Kent’s highlights, linking Canterbury, Dover and Folkestone.
