Top five winter walks to enjoy in the UK
1. Heddon Valley, North Devon
- Distance: 2 miles
- Difficulty: Easy
This walk’s diverse landscape, from the wooded valley to the rocky beach, makes it a wonderful walk for a winter’s day. This easy 2-mile trail is perfect for beginners, or for those more experienced walkers who just want a casual stroll. When you’ve finished exploring the beautiful valley, why not pop into local pub The Hunters Inn for a cosy pub lunch?
2. Tintern Abbey and Devil’s Pulpit, Wye Valley
- Distance: 7.5 miles
- Difficulty: Moderate
The incredible ruins of the 12th century Cistercian abbey are breath-taking whichever season they are visited in. However, on a frosty winter’s day whilst it is scattered with snow makes it a truly superb sight to see. At 7.5 miles, this is a moderately difficult walk for those experienced hikers or for beginners who want to push themselves that little bit further.
3. Beatrix Potter Walk, Sawrey, Lake District
- Distance: 13 miles
- Difficulty: Challenging
One for the literary and walking fans alike, walk around the shores of Lake Windermere and through the villages of Near and Far Sawrey and Hawkshead to be completely transformed into the world of Beatrix Potter. At 13 miles, The Beatrix Potter walk is great if you’re wanting a longer, more challenging walk on cold winter’s day whilst learning about the wonderful life of one of Britain’s most celebrated children’s authors.
4. Blakeney Freshes, Blakeney, Norfolk
- Distance: 3 miles
- Difficulty: Easy
Set on the stunning North Norfolk coastal path, this is an easy 3-mile walk with amazing views across the sea, marshes, and Blakeney Freshes reserve. All the bird lovers should take a stroll here and keep an eye out for the vast wildlife that resides within it. On a cold morning, you’ll catch the mist rising and may even be able to spot the golden plovers!
5. Corfe Castle, Dorset
- Distance: Variable - 1.5 or 5 miles.
- Difficulty: Moderate
The National Trust’s Corfe Castle is one of Britain’s most iconic landmarks and survivors of the English Civil War and is one of the UK’s most photographed sites. The beauty of this walk is that it can be adapted depending on how short, or long, you want your walk to be. If you enjoy a lengthy stroll, walk from Corfe Castle square up to Kimmeridge bay on the South West Coast Path. If you want a short walk, just walk around the village and up to the castle.
