Yachting Adventures: Where Are The Best Travel Destinations to Take to the Water in 2022?
The Best Travel Destinations to Take to the Water in 2022
Following the launch a couple of months ago of Below Deck: Adventure Matt Ovenden, on-the-water expert at Borrow A Boat, shares the best yachting holiday adventures to undertake this year…
For boating enthusiasts, a yachting holiday is always top of the agenda, but for those still new to the boating world, the prospect of taking to the water and setting sail can seem a little daunting. However, with so many different types of boating experiences to enjoy, and incredible, often untouched, destinations to explore by water, Matt Ovenden, on-the-water expert at Britain’s leading yacht charter marketplace Borrow A Boat, explains why a boating adventure should be top of every Brit’s holiday wish list.
Matt says: “When chartering a yacht, the key thing to consider is what kind of experience you’re after, and once you’ve nailed this down you can start to research the best locations for the kind of trip you want – whether that’s sunshine and relaxation, a beginner’s guide to sailing or a more unique adventure.
“For those wanting a traditional sunshine break with a twist, popular spots include Croatia, Greece and the Balearic Islands, however looking slightly further afield means you will not only experience the blue skies and sunshine you’re after, but you’ll also discover lesser-known beauty spots and wildlife in abundance.
“But for thrill seekers looking for a more out-there adventure, look to destinations like Norway, Sweden and even Scotland. Whilst they may not present the same opportunities for sunshine, instead picture an unforgettable backdrop of mountains, glaciers and deep coastal fjords.
“One thing is for sure - whether you are new to boating, or a seasoned sailor – every boating holiday is different and will create a lifetime of memories.”
So, for those inspired by the launch of Below Deck: Adventure, read on for Matt’s round-up of the best yachting holiday adventures to enjoy in 2022 whether you’re after a sunshine travel break with a twist, or a more out-there adventure…
Sweden
Home to 24,000 islands, the Stockholm Archipelago is a paradise for sailors.
Easily accessible from the Swedish capital, each island or islet has its own character. You’ll find rugged nature blending with wooded islands, complete with rocky cliffs and sandy beaches. But if it’s a relaxing week on the water you’re after, think again. Expect kayaking and, once you reach land, hiking to be at the top of the agenda.
The Seychelles
A feeding ground for five different types of sea turtle, the 115 tiny islands that make up the Seychelles situated over 1,000 miles from the coast of East Africa make for some of the best diving spots in the world.
Be ready to jump in and out of the water at a moment’s notice as you sail through the crystal-clear waters, spotting some of the world’s most incredible marine life along the way.
West Coast of Scotland
While Scotland might not immediately come to mind when you think of yachting adventures, thanks to the truly magnificent scenery there is good reason for it to be at the top of traveller’s lists.
If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of busy daily life, look no further than a sailing trip along the West Coast. Spend a week away from all forms of civilisation and make yourself at home in a deserted anchorage.
The Galapagos Islands
600 miles from mainland Ecuador, a sailing trip around The Galapagos Islands will see travellers taking on a true nautical adventure.
Not only will you be able to visit some of the most remote and unspoilt locations in the world, but expect to see dolphins riding alongside your boat, whale sharks swimming by and eagle rays springing from the ocean deep.
The Whitsundays
At the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, and with its famed white sand beach, a few days sailing around the Whitsundays is an experience like no other. Think crystal clear waters, an abundance of marine life, and spectacular scenery.
Be sure to check out the iconic Hill Inlet at Whitehaven Beach - with the tide shifting the sand and water to create a swirling fusion of turquoise colours, you’ll never want to leave.
French Polynesia
When it comes to picture perfect paradise, very few places match up to French Polynesia. Whilst it really is half a world away, once there the journey will long be forgotten. Set sail and lose yourself in this dream-like yachting playground.
Be sure to pack your snorkel – the coral reefs of Bora Bora are not something you’re going to want to miss out on.
Norway
Jaw-dropping mountains, cascading waterfalls and the chance to spot the Northern Lights make the fjords of Norway one of the best places to enjoy a boating adventure. Sail past some of Europe’s most dramatic coastlines and experience the might of some of the most breath-taking scenery in the world.
If you’re feeling particularly brave, give freshwater diving a go. It may be cold, but you will likely be rewarded with an Orca sighting.
